Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Monday, July 18th, 2016

The Atlanta Braves have partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to host the first ever Hiring Our Heroes sports expo in Atlanta this summer. Hiring Our Heroes is a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation which helps military veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful employment in a 21st century workforce.

The Hiring Our Heroes sports expo will take place at Turner Field on July 28 and include a Financial Well-Being Workshop and Employment Workshop provided by SunTrust and GE, respectively, as well as a hiring fair.

"We are extremely proud to partner with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation on their Hiring Our Heroes initiative, and it is an honor for us to bring the first sports expo to Atlanta this summer." said Braves President of Business Derek Schiller. "The Braves have long cherished our relationship with the military, and we hope this event will provide the resources and opportunities to make their transition into the workforce seamless."

The Hiring Our Heroes event also comes on the heels of the historic game the Braves played against the Miami Marlins at Fort Bragg on July 3 for an audience of 12,500 service members. The Fort Bragg Game marked the first regular season game of a professional sport ever played on an active military base.

Hiring Our Heroes has conducted expos with professional sports teams across the nation including the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Wild and more, and the Atlanta Braves are the first professional team in Atlanta to participate. Hiring Our Heroes has held hiring events of different sizes in every state and around the world, and from those events alone, have confirmed more than 30,000 hires for military veteran and spouse job seekers.

Job seekers will have the opportunity to participate in a SunTrust Financial Well-Being Workshop from 9:30-10:15 a.m., and a GE Employment Workshop from 10:15-11 a.m. The sports expo at Turner Field will also feature Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Dakota Meyer as a speaker. Meyer has been on the Hiring Our Heroes team for several years, and will talk with job seekers about his transition from active duty into the civilian workforce.

The hiring fair will take place from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., and is open to all veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses, with proof of military status (military ID card, retirement card, DD-214 discharge papers, or even a photo in uniform). More than 60 companies will be represented at the hiring fair, including the Atlanta Braves, Bank of America, Comcast, GE Energy, SunTrust Banks, The Home Depot and more.

Participants interested in attending the Hiring Our Heroes sports expo can register at www.hiringourheroes.org. All registered veterans and military spouses are eligible to receive two free tickets to attend that evening's game between the Braves and Phillies.
