Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Tuesday, January 17th, 2017

With a Constitutional Amendment authorizing a destination casino resorts in sight for the 2017 legislative session, the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce has invited MGM Resorts International President Bill Hornbuckle to serve as the keynote speaker of its 79th Annual Meeting. The meeting will take place on February 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Georgia Aquarium, 225 Baker Street NW, Atlanta.

Mr. Hornbuckle will discuss MGM Resorts International and what a destination casino resort could mean for Georgia. If the Legislature and then voters approve the Constitutional Amendment, MGM Resorts has expressed interest in developing a truly unique resort in the Atlanta metropolitan area creating thousands of jobs and generating tens of millions of dollars in annual spending with local businesses.

“We look forward to hearing about MGM Resorts’ potential plans for Georgia, as these plans may shape our ability to support the HOPE Scholarship; create new jobs and revenue sources; and attract new business to the state,” said Katerina Taylor, President and CEO of DeKalb Chamber.

During the 2016 legislative session, similar legislation was approved by the House Regulated Industries Committee, but was stalled. Rep. Ron Stephens, who sponsored the 2016 legislation, plans to introduce a similar one in January, which if passed by the Legislature, would allow for a statewide referendum whereby voters would decide if local communities can opt in to hosting destination casino resorts.

Early bird tickets to the event are $125 for members and $150 for nonmembers. Sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information and to register, please visit bit.ly/dcoc79am.
