The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has reached $1.1 billion in assets, as revealed in the 2017 Annual Report. In 2017 the Foundation also awarded $100 million in grants to nonprofit organizations.

During its 66th year, the Foundation reported that it received $144 million in new gifts from donors in 2017 through a combination of additions to existing funds and 59 new donor funds opened. Grants were made to nonprofits locally, nationally and internationally. More than 70% of those grants remained in the Community Foundation’s 23-county metro Atlanta region, where the Foundation has deep expertise on community needs and the nonprofits tackling those challenges.

The Foundation’s 2017 Annual Report is focused on the superpower of philanthropy and celebrates the people, organizations and community leaders who put their power and influence to work for good in our region.

“Atlanta continues to be a film production hub, especially for movies about superheroes, and we thought it was fitting to put a twist on that theme and shine a spotlight on the everyday heroes doing good work to make our region stronger,” said Alicia Philipp, president, Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. “While our super heroes don’t have X-ray vision or the ability to fly, they do have the strength and collective power to lift our region to greater good.”

Highlights from the Community Foundation’s year include:

$100 million distributed through 8,200 grants to 3,100 nonprofit organizations in five Impact Areas: Arts, Community Development, Education, Nonprofit Effectiveness and Well-being

Launched Learn4Life in conjunction with Atlanta Regional Commission, Metro Atlanta Chamber and United Way, aiming to identify barriers to students gaining a quality education and to scale solutions that will improve outcomes

Made strides to bridge the equity gap in metro Atlanta through innovative partnerships with MailChimp Community College and our Spark Opportunity donor giving circle

Transitioned a private, family foundation to a fund at the Foundation that allows the family to focus on the impact of their giving, not administrative tasks

Celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Jeffrey Fashion Cares, a fashionable fundraiser that in its history has raised nearly $3 million for the Atlanta AIDS Fund to fight HIV/AIDS in our region

“All-told, the stories illustrated in our annual report show the power of tremendous collective impact in a year’s time,” Philipp added. “But at its core, the work of philanthropy in Atlanta is happening one family at a time, one pair of glasses at a time and one innovative solution at a time.”
