Piedmont Atlanta Hospital generated more than $1.8 billion in revenue for the local and state economy in 2017, according to a recently released report by the Georgia Hospital Association.

The report also found that, during the same period, Piedmont Atlanta provided almost $26 million in uncompensated care, while creating 11,266 jobs due to its presence.

“Piedmont Atlanta Hospital is well known for bringing the highest quality healthcare to the people of Georgia, but we are also a powerful economic engine,” said Piedmont Atlanta CEO Patrick Battey, M.D., FACS. “We are honored that our patients entrust us with their care and thankful to be part of the community.”

The report revealed that Piedmont Atlanta had direct expenditures of more than $790 million in 2017. When combined with the economic multiplier developed by the United States Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis, the total economic impact of those expenditures was over $1.8 billion.

This output multiplier considers the “ripple” effect of direct hospital expenditures on other sectors of the economy, such as medical supplies, durable medical equipment and pharmaceuticals. Economic multipliers are used to model the resulting impact of a change in one industry on the “circular flow” of spending within an economy as a whole.

“Having a strong hospital means so much to a community,” said Dr. Battey. “As one of Becker’s Healthcare’s 100 Great Hospitals in America, not only is Piedmont Atlanta Hospital strong clinically, it also is a major economic force supporting the financial health of our community. We are proud of the contribution we make to Atlanta and beyond.”
