Today the State Board of Education announced Atlanta Public Schools as Georgia’s newest Charter System at their board meeting. Lt. Governor Casey Cagle praised Atlanta Public Schools for this significant achievement.
“By embracing the Charter System model, Atlanta Public Schools have accepted the challenge to enter into a contractual agreement with the state that gives them greater flexibility in exchange for guaranteed improvements in student achievement,” said Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. “School level governance teams composed of classroom teachers, parents, community partners, and school level leaders will be empowered to promote student achievement by embracing innovative reforms focused on ensuring that every student has a path to success. Public education should have a floor with no cracks, but never a ceiling so that each and every student is given the chance to reach their God-given potential.”
Atlanta Public Schools will implement the following approved educational enhancements for its students during their initial charter term:
· Authentic community engagement in school site decision making through Local School Governance Teams.
· Creation of a College and Career Academy in partnership with Atlanta Tech to increase access to career pathways;
· Create cluster signature programs allowing each cluster to develop a signature program plan that responds to the needs and vision of the communities by utilizing flexibility to adopt the curriculum and instructional structures that best serve the cluster and community schools.
