Google Fiber & NTEN Open Digital Inclusion Fellowship Applications for Second Year

Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Thursday, April 21st, 2016

Google Fiber and the Nonprofit Technology Network opened Digital Inclusion Fellowship applications, expanding the program for its second year. Since launching the fellowship, fellows have been hard at work across Atlanta and other Google Fiber cities, helping to build digital literacy programs from the ground up.

This year, the Digital Inclusion Fellowship will pair 22 people with local community organizations in 11 metro areas, where they’ll spend a year creating and helping to lead digital literacy programs. Projects include showing adults how to take their GEDs online, helping job-seekers learn digital workplace skills and teaching parents how to access their children’s grades online.

In Atlanta, fellows will work with Literacy Action and PowerMyLearning.

Literacy Action is dedicated to teaching undereducated adults literacy, life and work skills that empower them to reach their highest potential. Having already benefitted from a digital inclusion fellow in 2015, they are now able to incorporate technology into their daily lessons and look forward to further building and expanding their digital capabilities.

PowerMyLearning uses digital learning to help teachers, students and parents in high-poverty school communities improve educational outcomes. This will be the first time they’ll host a digital inclusion fellow. Since 2007, the organization has served more than 9,000 metro Atlanta students across 24 schools, and with assistance from NTEN and Google FIber, they hope to continue to grow and assist more students, closing both the digital divide and the achievement gap.

Over the course of the fellowship, Google Fiber will contribute approximately $1 million to cover salaries and benefits for fellows and stipends to fund new digital inclusion programs.

Google Fiber and NTEN are inviting aspiring fellows to apply for these positions. Applications for the fellowship are open now through May 13, 2016. This is an incredible opportunity for those who are interested in digital literacy and building programs from start to finish in their communities.
