Richard D. Phillips, dean of Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business and C.V. Starr Professor of Risk Management & Insurance, has been elected president of the board of the American Risk and Insurance Association. He will begin his one-year term in August 2017.

Prior to moving into college administration in 2012, Phillips was chair of Robinson’s Department of Risk Management & Insurance, where he led the unit’s shift from an insurance-centric focus to a broader study of risk dedicated to understanding, quantifying and developing strategies for managing risks faced by individuals, organizations and society. He has produced more than 50 scholarly publications and twice received the Robert I. Mehr Award as author of an article judged to have had the greatest impact on insurance economics 10 years after publication.

ARIA is the premier academic organization devoted to the study and promotion of knowledge about how more efficient management of risk advances human progress. Founded in 1932, the association’s membership is comprised of academic and industry professional members working in the fields of risk management and insurance, economics, and finance from around the world. ARIA emphasizes research relevant to the operational concerns and functions of insurance and risk management professionals, and provides resources, information and support on important insurance and risk management issues.
