Annual Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk Moves to New Downtown Venue

Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Friday, July 28th, 2017

The thousands of runners and walkers who descend upon downtown Atlanta each September for the annual Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Event will get to experience a new venue and race route this year. Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the 5K and “World’s Largest Office Party” will kick off at the Georgia World Congress Center on Thursday, September 7 at 7 p.m.

“For 35 years, we have helped keep Atlanta’s business community active and healthy, and we’re thrilled to celebrate this milestone at a new location in the Georgia World Congress Center,” said Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk Race Director Jeff Galloway. “This new venue affords us additional space to accommodate more corporate teams and fun-filled interactive zones. We believe racegoers will appreciate the access to an indoor, air-conditioned space that provides relief from the heat and protection from inclement weather.”

Under the leadership of Galloway, recognized nationally as an U.S. Olympian, best-selling author and “America's running coach,” the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Event has become a tradition in the Atlanta business community since its start in 1982.  Hailed as the Southeast’s largest annual corporate fitness event, each year 16,000+ runners and walkers on teams representing more than 400 of Atlanta’s top companies are encouraged to train together in preparation for the 5K.

“As a health care organization that provides care and coverage to more than 300,000 metro Atlantans and nearly 12 million members nationwide, we understand how living a healthy, active lifestyle can transform a person’s quality of life,” said Jim Simpson, president of Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. “We also believe that people thrive when they work for organizations that recognize the value of a healthy workforce. Employers who invest in workforce wellness programs benefit from increased employee productivity and cost savings related to health care. The Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk unites employees and employers around a common goal of promoting health.”

This year, corporate fitness teams will experience a scenic new course that winds through the heart of downtown Atlanta and past some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including Centennial Olympic Park, SkyView Atlanta, Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, the Center for Civil & Human Rights, Phillips Arena and the new Mercedes-Benz stadium. Event highlights include live entertainment by Atlanta’s Rupert’s Orchestra, interactive demos by Atlanta’s top sports teams, an awards ceremony, hundreds of company celebrations, a captivating light show and much more.

Team captains are encouraged to sign up on behalf of their organizations and recruit, motivate and coordinate fellow employees to ensure they take full advantage of all the perks that come along with this corporate fitness program. All registered participants are encouraged to join the eight-week “Get Active Atlanta” training program that includes a free two-week membership to LA Fitness, weekly “get fit’ tips and 5K run/walk training schedules developed by Race Director Jeff Galloway.  The “Get Active Atlanta” training program runs from July 10– September 7, 2017.
