GFOA Awards College Park, Block Grants for Badgett Stadium, Resumption of Hotel Construction

Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017

College Park has once again been recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association for the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

A public presentation to celebrate these accomplishments will therefore be offered during the September 5th regular meeting, to include attendance by staff from Finance and Accounting.

Special Projects Administrator Jackson Myers remains engaged with staff from the Fulton County Department of Housing and Community Development and his communication has helped in the City of College Park's participation in Fulton County's Community Development Block Grant Entitlement Program.  College Park has been notified that it has become eligible for improvement to the Bill Badgett Stadium as a result of this program.

Various members of city administration have been in communications with new ownership of the unfinished hotel facility located at 4475 Best Road to discuss specific requirements for development and operations respectively. The discussion clarified city hotel and extended stay related regulations, including recently revised policies. College Park is confident that after further vetting, construction may resume in the coming months.

The Mayor and City Council authorized a temporary moratorium regarding hair care establishments in late 2000. During the resulting cessation period, an ordinance was ultimately adopted that governed both square footage and various operational guidelines and standards for such businesses. The City of College Park currently enjoys an environment of economic prosperity in the historic downtown district; however, a follow-up review of the ordinance has been deemed necessary. A workshop discussion on the subject will therefore be offered during the August 21st meeting.
