Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta will host the 5th Annual Second Century Luncheon featuring Sylvia Acevedo, CEO Girl Scouts of the USA, on Thursday, September 28 at 11:30 a.m. at the historic Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta, GA.

Former rocket scientist turned CEO, Sylvia Acevedo, is a lifelong Girl Scout and longtime business leader.  Acevedo had held the title of interim GSUSA CEO since June 2016 and prior to this new role, she was secretary of the GSUSA Board of Directors and an enduring champion of girls' and women's causes.  As the CEO of GSUSA, she brings a deep understanding of today’s girls through leadership and service.  Her role as the White House Commissioner for   Presidential Initiative for Hispanic Educational Excellence allowed her to advocate for Hispanic, Asian and other minorities in the U.S. and is an example of her dedication to lead by action and through service.

At this year’s Second Century Luncheon, Acevedo will bring together Atlanta’s most notable leaders from the corporate, social, and philanthropic sectors to celebrate their generous support of Girl Scouts.   To observe the 101st anniversary of Girl Scouting, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta launched the Second Century Circle in 2013 to carry on the Girl Scouts’ mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

Support from Second Century Circle members has contributed to outreach and financial assistance to more than 10,000 at-risk girls in Greater Atlanta, training for 17,000 adult volunteers, and scholarships for Girl Scout Gold Awardees (the highest achievement in Girl Scouting).

“I am so excited about the opportunity to be in Atlanta with the top influencers to share how Girl Scouts is preparing the next generation of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) leaders” said Sylvia Acevedo, CEO, Girl Scouts of the USA.

This year’s Second Century Luncheon is co-chaired by Beth Schiavo and Donna Lowry.  Schiavo serves as part of the North Highland Executive team as managing director and chief financial officer, and in 2010 was named a “Woman of Excellence” by the Atlanta Business to Business magazine. Lowry is the new chief communications officer for Fulton County Schools, but is best known for her 29 years at WXIA-TV, 11Alive News, the NBC affiliate, where she created the award-winning “Class Act and Class Notes” segments. In addition to her nine Emmys, three Gabriel Awards, and other prestigious honors, Lowry is proudly in her ninth year as a Girl Scout leader and has led troops of girls ranging in age from kindergarten through 12th grade.
