Jerry Keen, the former Majority Leader of the Georgia House who helped lead the state GOP to its first Majority since Reconstruction, has been named President and CEO of Joe Tanner & Associates, a top-ranked government affairs and business consulting firm at the Georgia State Capitol.

Keen will oversee day-to-day operations of the firm that includes government affairs, government procurement and business services, said Joe Tanner, chairman of Tanner & Associates. Keen will also offer strategic advice to clients on key policy issues at the State Capitol, Tanner said.

Tanner, who has had a long and distinguished career first in state government and then with Tanner & Associates, will retain the title as founder and chairman of the company that launched in 1997.

“We welcome Jerry to the team and are honored to have someone with such talent, contacts and expertise to manage our firm,” Tanner said. “His instincts are impeccable when it comes to handling issues for clients under the Gold Dome.”

Keen, a Sandy Springs resident, has served a senior consultant for Troutman Sanders since 2010, counseling on legislative strategies. Prior to that, he served 10 years in the Georgia House as a Representative from Saint Simons, representing Georgia’s Southeast Coast. In his second term he was elected Minority Whip and led the GOP to its first Majority in 130 years. Keen was elected Majority Leader by the GOP caucus and served as Majority Leader from 2004 until his departure in 2010.

“I am honored and humbled to join such a distinguished group of public affairs experts at Tanner & Associates,” Keen said. “This is a well-established, well-respected organization under the Gold Dome. I look forward to growing our business and serving our clients with a variety of needs and challenges before state government and state lawmakers.”

Keen’s role under the Gold Dome has been instrumental over the years including being one of three House conferees on all budget matters. He was the architect of the Georgia Tax Reform Council to reform Georgia’s tax code, and he help shepherd through the strongest medical malpractice reform measure the state had seen in 30 years.

The Georgia Chamber of Commerce has awarded Keen the Lifetime Achievement Award and Georgia Trend Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians on numerous occasions. The Brunswick Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce awarded Keen the Alfred W. Jones award for his service to Coastal Georgia.

Tanner founded Tanner & Associates in 1997 after 26 years in state government including serving four gubernatorial administrations: Jimmy Carter, George Busbee, Joe Frank Harris and Zell Miller, including stints as commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources and Department of Labor. Its partners include veterans of Georgia state government and the halls of the State Capitol.

“Jerry brings a new perspective and excitement to our team,” Tanner said. “We look forward to the future and what we can do together for our clients.”
