Celebrate National Thrift Shop Day with Assistance League of Atlanta

Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Friday, August 17th, 2018

A display filled with special treasures to buy for only $1 each, a free mystery bag with additional items, half off advertised specials already at wallet-friendly prices. This is just a sampling of the great bargains Assistance League of Atlanta has “in store” at their Attic Treasures Thrift Shop the week of August 14-18 in celebration of National Thrift Shop Day.

The thrifting industry is growing at a rate of over seven percent a year, according to the National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops. Data from 2017 shows that in a given year, one in five Americans shop at a resale/thrift store.

Assistance League of Atlanta owns and operates Attic Treasures Thrift Shop in Chamblee, Georgia.  Located at 3435 Broad Street along Antique Row, the organization accepts new and gently used donations of clothing, furniture, books, collectibles, jewelry and household items and then re-sells them in their shop at low prices.  Proceeds go to fund seven philanthropic programs which support the group’s mission of helping adults and children in need in local communities.

National Thrift Shop Day is August 17.  “When we learned there is one day designated to recognize thrift shops, we naturally wanted to promote the success of our shop and what we accomplish every day of the year,” said Lynn Soylemez, past President and current Attic Treasures Thrift Shop Manager. She added, “Because we’re an all-volunteer organization, that means there are no paid employees so shoppers can be sure that almost every dollar spent with us goes straight back to help those in need.”

Since Attic Treasures has been in business over several decades, it has established a loyal following of shoppers. Many customers live and work in the Chamblee area but due to Assistance League’s reputation of offering quality merchandise at low prices, some travel from across the city as well as the state to shop.  “We love our shoppers,” says Lynn, “yet we want to expand and grow our customer base because the needs of our community continue to grow as well.”

Each week, different departments within the shop feature “sale” items with discounts offered on the already wallet-friendly prices.  For National Thrift Shop Day, special promotions will be going on all week.   Each day will feature a special area of bargains which will change daily. One display will be stocked with $1 dollar items all week long. A second display will offer a variety of items priced for $2, $3 or $4 dollars.  To add to the shopping fun, when a shopper spends $10 or more, they will receive a mystery bag with free items.

Attic Treasures is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information, visit the website at www.assistanceleagueatl.org.
