Georgia State University has enrolled the largest freshman classes in its history this fall at the university’s downtown campus and the five campuses of Georgia State’s Perimeter College.

At the Atlanta Campus, more than 4,600 first-year students enrolled at the university, an increase of 700 students compared to the fall semester of 2017. The class set a record with an average high school grade point average of more than 3.5. Average SAT scores for incoming students have increased by 20 points.

This fall’s student body is also the most diverse in the school’s history. A record number of African-American, Hispanic and Asian American students are enrolled at Georgia State. Students come from every county in Georgia, every state in the nation and more than 140 nations.

Georgia State’s Perimeter College campuses are also growing, welcoming 3,200 new freshmen, an increase of 300 over the fall of 2017.

Georgia State remains the largest university in Georgia, with more than 52,000 students enrolled across its campuses.

“The students who enrolled at Georgia State this fall not only constitute our largest class ever,” said Timothy Renick, senior vice president for student success, “they will have more academic programs to choose from, more access to internships and other learning opportunities in metro Atlanta, and more support to ensure they succeed.”

The university has been recognized nationally as a leader in student success efforts, from using predictive analytics to keep students on track to graduate, to awarding thousands of Panther Retention Grants, small grants to help fill financial gaps that might otherwise lead to a student dropping out.

Georgia State’s Honors College continues to grow in size and quality as well. The college is welcoming 242 new students this fall, bringing the total to more than 1,900 students at the college, based at the Atlanta Campus.

New students admitted to the Honors College set a record in quality, with an average SAT score of 1430, 20 points higher from last year, with an average high school GPA of 3.89.

At the five Perimeter College campuses this fall, more than 1,200 students are participating in the Honors College at Perimeter College.
