Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities, a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the health and well-being of children and families, is marking 40 years of serving families of sick and injured kids in Atlanta.

Atlanta's first Ronald McDonald House on Houston Mill Road, the 4th Ronald McDonald House in the world, opened on March 11, 1979. It was built to provide a haven for families who must travel far from home for their child's specialized medical care.

To commemorate this milestone, the Charity has launched a "Share A Night" campaign where supporters can donate a $40 gift to share in the cost to help families stay close to their sick child.  While the actual cost to operate a guest room at the Ronald McDonald House is $125 per night, the Charity asks families to contribute $20 per night. However, due to medical bills, time away from work and other living expenses, many families cannot afford even that amount. No family is ever turned away for inability to contribute.

'We are proud to make a difference in the lives of so many families. Since 1979, Atlanta RMHC has served more than 56,456 families of sick and injured children,” said Beth Howell, President and CEO Atlanta RMHC. 'The heart of our mission is to provide a welcoming home for families whose children are battling life-threatening medical conditions and injuries. In 40 years, our Ronald McDonald Houses have saved families more than $105.3 million in lodging, meals and transportation costs."

Atlanta RMHC's growth continues today according to Howell. 'Thanks to the generosity of the community, we now provide 81 rooms at two Houses, a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile and a Ronald McDonald Family Room. Our Chief Happiness Officer, Betty Lou, a certified therapy dog visits families to bring smiles and fun memories. We are grateful for the outpouring of financial and volunteer support that will enable us to meet the growing needs of the patients and families who rely on our services."

Governor Brian Kemp recently proclaimed March 11, 2019, as Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities Day in Georgia.
