The DeKalb County Human Services Department will kick off Older Americans Month with the opening ceremony of the 33rd Annual DeKalb County Senior Olympic Games on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at 10 a.m., Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center, 3181 Rainbow Drive, Decatur, GA 30034.

Older Americans’ Month, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Administration on Community Living recognizes the achievements and contributions of individuals 55 years and older.

The 2019 theme for Older Americans’ Month is Connect, Create, Contribute, which encourages older adults and their communities to:

•           Connect with friends, family, and local services and resources.

•           Create through activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment.

•           Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.

This week, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation declaring the month of May, Older Americans’ Month in DeKalb County.  

DeKalb’s Human Services Department, which manages of the county’s two multipurpose senior centers and four neighborhood senior centers, will host several activities in May to include: an art exhibit at the Central DeKalb Senior Center; an exercise expo at the South DeKalb Senior Center; jazz performances and a Motown Revue at the Lou Walker Senior Center; and dance performances at the North DeKalb Senior Center; the Lithonia Senior Center and DeKalb Atlanta Senior Center.

Activities for this year have been planned in collaboration with DeKalb County Public Library, DeKalb Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs Department, and the City of Decatur.
