Atlanta Board of Education Approves Atlanta Public Schools’ $1.45B Budget

At its monthly administrative meeting on Monday, June 6, the Atlanta Board of Education approved Atlanta Public Schools’ $1.45 billion budget for the 2022-2023 school year. The spending plan includes over $25 million in staff compensation enhancements, along with nearly $50 million for programs, technology and resources focused on student success.
Highlights of Atlanta Public Schools’ FY2023 budget include:
Compensation Upgrades: $26m
- Step raises for all eligible employees on a pay grade/step (ranges from 4.6% to 5.3%).
- Increase to teacher pay scale includes $2000 Governor’s pay raise.
- Convert remaining hourly special education paraprofessionals to full time with benefits.
- Market adjustments for specific employee groups, including bus drivers, mechanics, parent liaisons, and instructional support employees.
- New pay scale for student support employees such as Social Workers, Psychologists, and therapists.
Academic Recovery Efforts: $30.5m
- Academic Universal Screener
- Extension of the elementary school day by 30 minutes
- Summer learning and summer enrichment (Academic Recovery Academy)
- Over $14m in CARES funding distributed to schools to support academic intervention
Other Operational Enhancements: $16m
- Increase in Student Transportation program related to Douglass 9th grade Academy
- Increase in Safety programs related to new security initiatives
- Increase in Maintenance programs due to deferred maintenance items
- Planned Lawson upgrade for FY23
- Increase in Turnaround program to provide support to turnaround schools
