Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

The Atlanta office of global architecture and design firm Perkins+Will took home more design awards than any other firm during the recent 2017 American Institute of Architects Georgia Design & Honor Awards, with six design awards and two People’s Choice awards. The AIA Georgia Design & Honor Awards recognize excellence in architectural design and celebrate the contributions of architects, designers and owners to the built environment.  Perkins+Will’s winning projects ranged from a corporate office renovation and rebranding to the creation of a state-of-the-art innovation center.

The team also dominated the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Georgia Design awards, bringing home seven honors for projects throughout the country.

Perkins+Will received the following awards:

2017 AIA Georgia Excellence Award for an Interior project was awarded for Perkins+Will’s Newell Brands project. The Perkins+Will team helped Newell Brands recreate a dated building they had purchased. The newly renovated space included a five-story staircase, a rooftop terrace and green roof, outdoor patio/terrace and large central communal zones on each floor. The complete renovation also included new brand identification, resulting in a fresh, energetic and collaborative space.

2017 AIA Georgia Honor Award for Built Projects went to two distinct, but different Perkins+Will projects. The winning projects are Site Operations Center at BMW and Peterson Dining Hall at Camp Southern Ground.  The BMW project is the first new executive building on the grounds of BMW Plant 10 in Spartanburg, SC since its initial development. It is a 65,000 SF office nestled into a 78-acre wooded area, and fits with BMW’s brand of innovative and modern.  The passion project of Grammy-award winning musician Zac Brown, Camp Southern Ground serves children on the neurological spectrum, typical children and those from gold-star military families. The design evokes a series of architectural elements from metal utility buildings, gable and hip roof forms to front and rear patios, all to create a contemporary building with a reassuring and familiar feel. The final AIA Georgia Honor Award was given to Perkins+Will for their renovation and rebranding of a Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, a neglected urban school in Atlanta’s Grant Park neighborhood. The Perkins+Will team took a 1973 Brutalist-inspired building and preformed major upgrades on a limited budget. The team redefined the entrance to the building, brought more daylight to classrooms and improved shared components like the auditorium, cafeteria and media center. The Branded Environments team from Perkins+Will also created a new brand for the school, which helped to transform the school and engage staff, students and community.

Perkins+Will also received two Merit Awards: one for its design of Clemson University’s Watt Family Innovation Center and the other for its 101 Marietta Lobby renovation and rebranding for the Dilweg Companies.

AIA Georgia also recognized projects that were voted on by the design community. For weeks leading up to the award, Georgia architecture and design industry participants entered their votes for AIA Georgia’s People’s Choice. The renovation of Newell Brands Atlanta office won a People’s Choice Award, as well as CARTI Cancer Center.

A jury of distinguished guests connected to all facets of the design profession served as judges for the competition. As projects are subject to diverse contexts, programs, budgets and restraints, each entry was judged for the success with which the project had met its individual requirements.
