Carter Center Chairman Jason Carter and Tom Kimbis, General Counsel for the Solar Energy Industries Association, headline the Georgia Solar Energy Association's 9th Annual Southern Solar Summit on October 19. This year's Summit is presented by the Turner Foundation and will be held at The Carter Center, 453 Freedom Parkway in Atlanta. Registration begins at 9am and the panel discussions will begin at 10am.

Carter Center Chairman Jason Carter will provide the luncheon keynote address.

Jason Carter is Chairman of the Carter Center Board of Trustees and a partner at the law firm of Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore, LLP in Atlanta, Georgia. As the grandson of the Carter Center’s founders, he has participated in the Center’s programs for 20 years, working to advance peace and health across the globe.  Prior to becoming Chairman of the Board, he oversaw the Center’s strategic planning and engaged with the Center’s programs in Liberia, Egypt, Myanmar and the West Bank/Gaza.  Aside from the Center, he combines a successful litigation practice with a strong commitment to public service.  From 2010-2015 he served in the Georgia State Senate.  In 2014, Jason was the Democratic Nominee for Governor of Georgia, receiving more than 1.1 million votes in a race that garnered substantial national attention. 

Carter supported solar-friendly policies during his tenure in the State Senate. He also first suggested to his famous grandfather, former President Jimmy Carter, that the Carter farm in Plains should become the site of a solar development. That completed project now provides more than 50 percent of Plains’ power needs.

Tom Kimbis, General Counsel for the Solar Energy Industries Association, will provide the afternoon keynote address.

Tom Kimbis works at the nexus of national policy questions now gripping the solar industry in Georgia and beyond. Having spearheaded SEIA’s push for consumer protection and education in the residential solar market, he now works with SEIA’s efforts to prevent the imposition of tariffs on imported panels and preserve the federal Investment Tax Credit for solar.

Kimbis has worked in renewable energy since 2000, when he began supporting research, analysis, legislative, and planning efforts across all energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In his role there, he pioneered a number of important initiatives that helped accelerate solar commercialization. He led the creation of the Solar America Cities program, a DOE partnership with U.S. cities to develop innovative methods for the adoption of solar energy technologies. He served for six years as Chairman of The Solar Foundation, a nonprofit promoting the increased use of solar energy through education and research. He earned his B.A. from Williams College and a J.D. from the University of Virginia.
