Douglas Stevens, a scholar known for his research demonstrating how social and moral norms influence organizational and market behavior, has been named director of the School of Accountancy at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business.

Since joining Robinson in 2013, Stevens has chaired the school’s Ph.D. program and led every faculty search. He also has raised the academic unit’s research profile, resulting in its ranking among the top 10 U.S. programs for research productivity in managerial accounting.

Stevens, who holds the James E. & Patricia Copeland Deloitte Chair in Accountancy, has been published in leading academic journals including The Accounting Review; Contemporary Accounting Research; Accounting, Organizations and Society; Experimental Economics; the Journal of Business Ethics; the Journal of Management Accounting Research; and Behavioral Research in Accounting. He also is author of “Social Norms and the Theory of the Firm” forthcoming from Cambridge University Press in September.

“Doug understands the School of Accountancy’s significant history and its innate strengths, and he has the leadership skills necessary to advance the unit forward to an exciting future,” said Robinson College Dean Richard Phillips. “We look forward to working collaboratively with him and his colleagues as he assumes the broader mantle of leadership to ensure the School of Accountancy continues to make important contributions to the success of Robinson.”

Stevens came to Robinson from Florida State University where he was a full professor, faculty director of its MBA program and a member of its promotion and tenure committee. During his time there, he spent a semester at the University of Glasgow as a visiting fellow of the Adam Smith Research Foundation. Earlier in his career, he held positions at Syracuse University and the University of New Hampshire. Stevens holds a Ph.D. in accounting from Indiana University.
