Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Wednesday, September 12th, 2018

The PATH400 trail is in the running for a People’s Choice Award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials America’s Transportation Awards. This project transformed a right-of-way along GA 400 into a 5.2-mile bikeable and walkable greenway that provides a beautiful and safe path for citizens to enjoy. PATH400 is one of just 12 projects from across the country that were selected in regional competitions and are now vying for the national award.

PATH400 is competing to be named by the public in online voting as The People’s Choice for the Nation’s Best Transportation Project. Online voting continues through Saturday, September 22. Cast votes for the PATH400 project at https://transportationawards.secure-platform.com/a/gallery/rounds/10/details/1586. Individuals are allowed to vote for PATH400 once per day (per IP address). The People’s Choice Award will be presented at AASHTO’s annual meeting on September 23 in Atlanta. To see all 12 projects, visit https://americastransportationawards.org/

“This is truly a proud moment for Georgia. The project was built through local funding only - no state or federal funds were used,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E. “The partnership between the PATH Foundation, Livable Buckhead, the Buckhead CID and Georgia DOT resulted in unused right-of-way property being transformed into a beautiful and functional pedestrian-friendly path. You may not even realize that you are right next to a major highway.”

“PATH400’s success is a direct result of the great partnership that brought it to life,” said Denise Starling, executive director of Livable Buckhead. “We are thrilled to be in contention for the People’s Choice Award, and thankful to GDOT for nominating PATH400.”

PATH400 was built on the right-of-way of GA 400 and the public land adjacent to Metro Atlanta Regional Transit Authority (MARTA). It reclaims what was a highway-only corridor and creates a multimodal trail by turning underutilized gray infrastructure into a useable green space. PATH400 connects neighborhoods, offices and retail locations and provides users with an easy way to explore, exercise, commute and engage.

The best part – if the PATH400 project wins, a $10,000 cash prize will be awarded, which will be donated to Livable Buckhead to help complete the trail. Livable Buckhead is a nonprofit organization that is spearheading construction of PATH400 in Buckhead, in partnership with GDOT, the PATH Foundation and the Buckhead Community Improvement District.
