83rd Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival Welcomes 149 Young Artists for Atlanta High School Art Exhibition

Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Thursday, March 21st, 2019

While the Artist Market at the 83rd Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival welcomes hundreds of professional fine artists, the festival supports young artists each year with the award-winning Atlanta High School Art Exhibition (AHSAE). Giving Atlanta-area high school students the chance to take part in a real artist competition, the AHSAE received 850 submissions – that’s 150 more than last year – from which a panel of judges has selected the top 149 works to exhibit in the Piedmont Park Community Center during the festival.

Top winners for this year’s AHSAE include Brookwood High School junior Mei Ding with Best of Show for “Force,” Milton High School senior Sydney Burton with 2nd Place for “Flick” and Roswell High School junior Briley Kim with 3rd Place for “Cattle Skull.” In all, the AHSAE recognizes 10 place awards and five honorable mentions. At the festival, exhibition visitors have the chance to vote for People’s Choice. All entering students receive a T-shirt courtesy of Binders.

Sponsored and supported by the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, the AHSAE provides prizes and scholarships for top submissions. During the festival, teams of high school artists are also invited to participate in the Art Throwdown, a live, timed art competition that takes place on festival Saturday at 12:30 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Community Center.

In addition to an exhibition of works by talent young artists, here is what attendees at the city’s largest and longest-running fine arts festival will find:

ARTIST MARKET

Featuring the top 260 artists selected from more than 1,000 entries each year, the juried, fine art Artist Market at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival welcomes art lovers to peruse and purchase. Because the festival is one of the first events of the art festival season, artists display their newest and best work straight from their studios.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Atlanta Dogwood Festival offers a variety of live entertainment throughout the weekend. From big-name bands on the Coca-Cola Main Stage to local dance troupes on the International Stage, there is always something exciting to see and hear at the festival.

MIMOSA 5K

Following a course through the beautiful and historic Midtown neighborhood, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival Mimosa 5K grows in popularity each year. The Saturday morning race ends with an OJ & bubbly toast in Piedmont Park after which runners can stay and enjoy the festival. This year, younger runners can participate in the first-ever “Mini Mosa,” a .5K for children 8 and younger.

GLOBAL CONNECT

In addition to welcoming hundreds of performers to the International Stage each year, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival features edutainment booths hosted by local consulates and organizations representing the many global communities that call Atlanta home. The International Village is an important festival initiative that works to bridge nations and grow intercultural awareness and understanding.

TASTING EVENT

Under the spacious VIP Tent overlooking the Main Stage, Backyard Bites & Brews is an all-inclusive experience that has become a festival favorite. This special tasting event brings together restaurants, chefs and local breweries under the spacious tent with plenty of seating, private bathrooms and a dedicated bar. Tickets are now available for festival Saturday and Sunday from 1 – 5 p.m. each day.

MAIN STAGE VIP

For a perfect view of the live music performances on festival evenings, visitors can purchase Main Stage VIP tickets and enjoy dinner from J.D.’s Bar-B-Que, reduced-price drinks, comfy seating and private bathrooms under the VIP Tent. Tickets are now available for festival Friday and Saturday from 7 – 10 p.m.

KIDS & FAMILIES

Making sure that all ages are entertained, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival has two areas for kids to enjoy: the Kids Village, featuring hands-on activities for younger attendees, and the Midway, including a variety of rides for all ages and inflatables for toddlers. Festival opening day kicks off with Family Friday when attendees can purchase wristbands for unlimited ride access and discounts on food and beverages.

DISC DOGS

A festival staple for more than two decades, the onsite disc dog competition hosted by The Greater Atlanta Dog & Disc Club amazes onlookers with the feats of super talented canines. This USDDN World Finals Qualifier has grown to be one of the most prestigious competitions in the world today and definitely a favorite with festival attendees.
