Aughtry has served as president and chairman of the Southern Federal Tax Institute and continues to serve on the board of trustees. He is certified by the Georgia, South Carolina and Texas Bar and recognized with accolades from Georgia Super Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in America.
 
He earned his undergraduate degree from The Citadel, his graduate degree from the University of South Carolina and Master of Laws in Taxation degree from Emory University.
