Intuitive to Invest Over $500 Million to Expand its Peachtree Corners Campus

Thursday, August 19th, 2021

Founded only nine years ago, Peachtree Corners has quickly established itself as an economic leader in the Atlanta metro area.  Home to Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies, the Gwinnett city continues to attract top-tiered businesses.  On August 4, Intuitive, a publicly traded company that makes robotic-assisted surgical systems, announced plans to expand its presence in Peachtree Corners, investing over $500 million into its current campus and creating over 1,200 high-paying jobs.

According to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Intuitive’s expansion is among the largest announced projects in the state this year in terms of jobs and investment and the largest in Gwinnett County’s entire 200-year history.

Located at 5655 Spalding Drive, Intuitive, a global leader in minimally invasive surgical care, will expand its current location to create a regional headquarters. The expansion will include a six-building campus totaling more than 750,000 square feet of manufacturing and engineering operations, state-of-the-art training facilities for surgeons and hospital care teams, and administrative offices.  The new facilities will open in phases, as they are constructed, with the entire expansion project scheduled to be completed by 2024.

Estimated economic impact:

  • The company expects to hire for a variety of roles in manufacturing, production, distribution, engineering, sales, training, and customer service. The average salary is estimated to be $130,000.

  • The new state-of-the-art Training Center will be designed for use by employees and visiting surgeons and other medical professionals. The number of visitors is estimated at 6,000 annually resulting in visitor generated revenue of $4.9 million: 16,000 hotel room stays generating $2.5 million for local hotels, plus an estimated $150 per night on food, travel, and miscellaneous items while in town.

  • Construction cost of this project is estimated at $540 million.  The build-to-suit campus encompasses approximately 17 ½ acres and includes two new facilities totaling approximately 800,000 square feet plus a new parking structure.

  • The capital expansion project is expected to positively impact the local construction industry by the creation of approximately 2,000 construction and construction-related jobs during the construction phase.

“I, along with the entire council, appreciate Intuitive’s confidence in selecting our city to expand,” said Mayor Mike Mason. “Since our incorporation in 2012, we’ve worked diligently in attracting quality businesses to invest in our city. This is a win-win for our business community and our residents. The creation of hundreds of high-paying quality jobs only further strengthens the city’s position as a regional job hub.”

Intuitive makes the da Vinci Surgical System, which is designed to enable complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach. According to the company, more than 1.2 million procedures were performed using its technology last year. Its customers include hospitals and health care facilities.

“Our city is ideal for life science businesses like Intuitive,” said City Manager Brian Johnson. “Its expansion will strengthen our growing cluster of biopharmaceutical and health information technology businesses. We expect Intuitive’s investment in our city will attract other similar businesses who see the value of investing in Peachtree Corners.”

Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Intuitive was founded in 1995. It is considered a global technology leader in minimally invasive care and the pioneer of robotic-assisted surgery.
