Georgia Society of Professional Engineers F2F 2-Way Active Conversation on September 13th

Staff Report

Friday, September 10th, 2021

Truly horrifying – Collapsing buildings, breeched levees and dams, falling bridges, poisoned drinking water or no water to drink, exploding chemical plants, cities on fire, erupting sinkholes, environmental disasters.  A surgical mistake can be tragic. Real estate transaction mistakes, while a hassle, are usually correctable. Accounting errors seldom result direct loss of life. Incompetent engineering can kill and injure scores, hundreds or even thousands with catastrophic financial costs in the billions of dollars. By law, like all other US states and territories, Georgia licenses engineers and regulates the profession. Anyone offering to provide engineering services must be licensed and companies must be authorized.

Darien Sykes, PE, SE - Vice Chair, and William Womack, PE, and Taylor Wright, PE, members of Georgia State Board of Professional Engineers & Land Surveyors will be featured at the September 13th hybrid face to face and live online monthly meeting of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers Atlanta Metro Chapter at the Wild Wing Café, 4788 Ashford Dunwoody Rd, Dunwoody, GA and online via the GSPE video channel, www.youtube.com/GSPEng. The informal discussion will cover the operation of the board, practitioners’ concerns and ways to make improvements.

“Of course we welcome the opportunity to talk about board rules, policies, etcetera, but more importantly, we want to hear from the professionals and the public we serve. What are we doing well? How can we improve? I really hope people will think of discussion points ahead of the meeting,” Says Mr. Womack.

The face to face gathering will start at 6:00, the online presentation will start at 7:00. Online participants will be able to use the chat feature to pose questions during the live presentation. The meeting presentation will be recorded and available for later viewing at no cost. This presentation, like the previous presentations, will qualify for a required engineering professional development hour (PDH). Currently registered professional engineers, those engineers aspiring to become PEs, and others engaged in engineering would benefit from the presentation.

“As a current board member and a past board chair,“ said Bill Womack, “it has always been my philosophy rather than only passing judgement and assessing penalties, it is better to make sure practitioners are aware of the requirements for professional and competent engineering.”

Anyone in the field of engineering and members of the general public are welcome to pose discussion topics and to learn about engineering and public welfare.

Both F2F and Online are FREE.
