Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport #1 Most Reliable U.S. Airport

Thursday, February 9th, 2023

After a 2022s barrage of flight cancellations many want to know, will 2023 air travel fare better?

Well, if you're traveling via Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport your chances of getting delayed are some of the slimmest. Despite being one of the busiest, those transiting through Atlanta have the smallest chance of facing a flight delay. Only 12.8% of the airport's flights were delayed over the past 5 years. Compare that to San Francisco's delay rate of 22.5%

These findings are documented in a report from InsuranceRanked diving into flight data over the past 5 years (Jan 2017 through September 2022, from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics). The report breaks down and visualizes which airlines, airports, and even times of the year have proved the most reliable for staying on schedule and which are best to avoid.

Findings include:

  • Delta has proved to be the #1 most reliable airline of 2022, with the fewest percentage of delays at 16%. Last place goes to Southwest with 24.48% of its flights delayed (and that's not including the most recent cancellation chaos).

  • Since 2017, it's Hawaiian Air leaving fliers in sunny spirits with just 10.2% of flights delayed from 2017-2021. While JetBlue has struggled the most to keep flights on schedule (24.4% of flights were delayed).

  • Best time to fly: January, September, October, or November when customer volume is lowest is the best time to travel to increase your chances of evading a delay (forget summer and December).

  • Don't blame the weather: Of all the reasons for delays across air carriers and airports, weather is the least of our problems. In 8 of the 9 months of 2022 analyzed, carrier-related issues were the #1 source of delays. This includes delays stemming from circumstances in the airlines control such as: crew shortages, cleaning, fueling, and baggage loading.
