Swinerton, a leading general contractor with offices across the country, announces its selection as one of the City of Atlanta’s Managing General Contractor (MGC) On Call providers. In partnership with Atlanta-based WEBMyers Construction, a woman- and minority-owned general construction company, Swinerton is now one of the city’s preferred contractor and construction vendors at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) for upgrades, repairs and renovation projects.

“Chosen to be part of Atlanta’s MGC On Call program is not only a great honor, but also another expansion of our aviation portfolio beyond the airlines and the Atlanta Airlines Terminal company (AATC),” explains Derek Mosiman, vice president, division manager, Swinerton Atlanta. “We tackle every project as a partner. That’s why aviation professionals have called upon our team time and time again since 2017. Our detailed, realistic schedules and onsite oversight enable us to deliver within an extremely complicated, virtually nonstop operating environment within top-level safety and security protocols.” Swinerton has been awarded similar contracts at other major airports in other US cities including Denver (DEN), Los Angeles (LAX), San Diego (SAN) and San Francisco (SFO).

As one of only four chosen for the City’s MGC On Call program, the Swinerton/WEBMyers joint venture partnership is pre-approved to facilitate construction projects at the world’s busiest airport. The program eliminates the bidding process for both landside and airside construction projects with a $10 million cap per project. The three-year contract includes an option for a two-year extension.

“This is an opportunity for WEBMyers to not only partner with another construction leader, but also expand our interior construction capabilities to the aviation world,” adds Chondra Webster Myers, CEO, WEBMyers Construction. “Our current project with AATC demonstrates our ability to efficiently manage complexity – in project scope, scheduling and security. Because of the unique aviation logistics, we mapped out the entire course of action from beginning to end equipping us with the ability to pivot, when necessary, sight obstacles and avoid potential pitfalls.”

While awaiting its first MGC On Call assignment, the team of Swinerton and WEBMyers is underway with a $7.2 million project for the AATC. The exterior painting of Concourses E and T commenced in November with completion expected early summer. The project scope requires navigating varying building elevations between the structures, constructing scaffolding to access multi-level surfaces, protecting existing elements such as sky lights and communication screens and scheduling activity around flight schedules and gate usage as well as weather conditions. This is the second project Swinerton/WEBMyers was awarded from the AATC.

Adding to its roster of $22 million projects completed on behalf of Delta Air Lines at ATL, Swinerton is completing pre-planning for the $4.5 million renovation of Delta Airline’s Concourse E Sky Club. Project scope includes: upgrading the primary entrance to align with current Delta brand and operation standards, repositioning the bar to a more centralized location, doubling the size of the food and beverage stations and upgrading the overall aesthetic. Designed by Warner Summers; construction of the phased, eight-month project will begin this spring with completion expected by year-end. This is Swinerton’s 8th project on behalf of Delta at ATL.

Aviation Construction Takes Flight

“As passenger enplanement levels return to the recording-breaking levels of 2019, so has the pipeline of aviation construction projects,” explains Mosiman. Swinerton’s increased activity at ATL comes at a time when airports and airlines are seeing a tremendous need for updated infrastructures and facilities – a demand that existed prior to the Pandemic and is now exponentially larger in scope. “We’ve seen a new emphasis on construction modifications that support the passenger experience as well as the health and safety of the crew, passengers and terminal employees. This really adds another element to aviation projects,” adds Mosiman.

In 2019, airports and airlines were already working above capacity due to the age of many facilities and infrastructure. Now, with travel resuming to pre-Pandemic heights, the needs that existed prior to March 2020 compound with additional needs as airlines and airports look to improve the overall travel experience and instill confidence in its passengers. “There is a robust pipeline of aviation construction opportunities, and Swinerton is ready and responding.”

Since 2017, Swinerton has been tapped for projects at ATL by AATC, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and other airlines. Nationally, Swinerton has completed $2.5 billion of aviation construction projects uniquely positioning the team to take on the next generation of aviation opportunities.
