Aurora Theatre is proud to announce its Season 28 Signature Series where audiences will enjoy “A Winning Hand.” The Lawrenceville arts hub’s 28th year is set to include more of what theatregoers crave— Broadway-caliber musicals, thought-provoking plays and timeless holiday magic— with twists of unexpected brilliance and heart-warming humanity. The season will be a first for Aurora Theatre, with every show featuring a female lead. It kicks off with the true story and unforgettable music of Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, followed by audience-favorite Christmas Canteenreturning in November for its 28th annual production. Two plays—Knead by Mary Lynn Owen and Greener Pastures by Lori Fischer—are set to inspire in the new year with stories of rivalry, family and understanding. Audiences can expect the beloved gospel musical Sister Act to close out the season with a shout of “REJOICE!”

"I'm so invigorated about Aurora’s upcoming season. Every performance will demonstrate the beautiful humanity of powerful stories," said Aurora Theatre Co-Founder and Producing Artistic Director Ann-Carol Pence. "I'm especially proud that each show features a woman in the leading role. As a woman-led company, it gives me great joy to amplify the passion, humor and resilience of many amazing female characters, one of which wrote my all-time favorite song, ‘You’ve Got a Friend.’"

In addition to the Season 28 Signature Series, Aurora Theatre will continue to engage the community with its operations of the $45 million Lawrenceville Arts Center, which will host hundreds of arts, entertainment, educational and community events throughout the year. Beloved series such as Aurora Children’s Playhouse, LAC Limited Engagements, LAC Global, Aurora Comedy Nights, Teatro Aurora and the Lawrenceville Ghost Tours are set to return with a variety of shows and experiences designed for diverse ages, backgrounds and lifestyles. Budding theatre professionals can develop their performing skills at Aurora Theatre Academy, while Aurora Learning Library continues to instill a lifelong love of theatre as they invite schools to the LAC for special events. The LAC will also be open to corporate groups and individual bookings for private networking events, performances or personal celebrations.

What can you do when life doesn’t go according to the recipe? A woman plagued by insomnia is determined that her mother’s bread recipe will finally work. The ingredients of time and memory keep interfering, and the bread-baking process – performed in real time– becomes a deeper journey. On the eve of a significant birthday, the granddaughter of Cuban immigrants mixes the ingredients of her past into a spectacular night that rises and falls with loaves that somehow end up in the oven. The play stars Mary Lynn Owen, Suzi Bass Award-winner for her performance in Aurora’s Wit.

Clyde & Sandra Stickland Grand Stage
Forty-eight-year-old Dorothy, a two-bit actor with performance anxiety, has reached her breaking point portraying a singing sandwich on the local children's show Lunchtime with Munchkins. When she finds a technicality in the contract, she chucks it all to live the good life at the Greener Pastures Retirement Center. Her new roommate, the wisecracking curmudgeon Maxine, wants the attention-grabbing whippersnapper gone. This battle of wills and wits is a Golden Girls meets The Odd Couple crowd-pleaser that makes a perfect date with grandma.

SISTER ACT
May 23 – June 16, 2024
Clyde & Sandra Stickland Grand Stage
Lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier is in fear for her life after witnessing a murder. The cops answer her prayers (sort of) by putting her in protective custody in the one place the police are sure she won't be found – a convent! Disguised as a nun but not in the habit of attending church, Diva Deloris is at odds with the rigid lifestyle of the sisters. She finds her place turning the stoic choir into a heavenly chorus, but her joyful noise could prove deadly. Based on the hit 1992 film, this uplifting musical is reason to REJOICE!
