Georgia State is finding new ways to honor the university research community with a recently launched annual awards program. The Ignite Awards recognize outstanding contributions from faculty, staff and students whose work offers tremendous impact on advancing knowledge, solving complex problems, creating new innovations and enhancing quality of life in Georgia and beyond.

Vice President for Research and Economic Development Tim Denning said the Ignite Awards also represent a new forum for celebrating excellence in research across the university.

“The Ignite Awards were crafted to celebrate the extraordinary research enterprise at Georgia State. We want to honor the dedicated individuals who make our research, scholarship and creativity so impactful.”

The university received nearly 100 submissions during the inaugural call for nominations.

“These awards will recognize our outstanding faculty, staff and students across disciplines and campuses,” Denning said.

The awards include:

Research Scholarship and Creativity Award
Research Mentorship Award
Early Career Research Impact Award
Research Administration Excellence Award
Doctoral Research Achievement Award
Postdoctoral Research Achievement Award
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicolle Parsons-Pollard said these awards are significant because they offer the research community a peer-to-peer framework to recognize exemplary contributions.

“Research is an enormous point of pride for Georgia State,” Parsons-Pollard said. “These awards allow for recognition of our colleagues and a celebration of exploration, creativity and innovation that impacts Georgia and the world.”

The winners will be announced during fall semester, and a ceremony and reception will take place in November.

Georgia State’s research community has been growing at a notable pace over the last decade. Research expenditures have topped $1 billion in the last five years, according to an annual survey conducted by the National Science Foundation. Researchers at Georgia State earned $164.2 million in awards in FY22 — the highest in university history.
