InsiderAdvantage: Marietta Event Highlights Benefits for Veterans

I read the recent Education issue of JAMES magazine and it reminded me about the lack of education our veterans receive and how United Military Care is addressing it. Success begins with education, and we have failed to educate our veterans on the benefits they are eligible for and the programs that are designed to help them thrive as civilians.

In November 2021, the Census Bureau released a report stating that almost one-half of veterans (46.7 percent) received some military service-related cash or noncash benefit in 2017. But why only 46.7 percent?

The answer is simple: education. Veterans and their families need guidance regarding what services, benefits and programs are available. Secondly, the frustration experienced by the veteran in applying for and receiving benefits prevents them from seeking further help.

With over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) requesting a total of $325.1 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2024, a 5.4 percent increase above FY 2023, why do we continue to see suicide, unemployment, homelessness and despair among veterans on the rise?

Service members, Veterans, and their families need to understand what benefits are available and how to plan for success after the military. When leaving the military, the current TAP (Transition Assistance Program) covers only a tiny portion of information. Times, programs and needs change. Education should, too.

United Military Care tabulated results from a ten-year study on challenges our veterans face and created the We CARE Veterans Fair™. Fair attendees will have free access to government programs, healthcare services, educational opportunities, job placement assistance and financial aid options. There will also be representatives from over 100 organizations and agencies, such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, nonprofit organizations and local community groups that can provide guidance and assistance on various issues.

Additionally, the fair will feature opportunities such as navigating the Veterans Affairs system, understanding and applying for benefits, mental health support and PACT Act Evaluations. Furthermore, the fair will provide no-cost, on-site legal assistance, housing resources and aging information to ensure that all veterans– regardless of age, socio-economic background or military history– have access to comprehensive support networks.

By providing these resources and support services, the We CARE Veterans Fair™ strives to empower veterans. Education not only improves their overall well-being but their family and community as well.

There are several ways to get involved and support the United Military Care’s We CARE Veterans Fairs™, a platform dedicated to empowering military and Veteran families with solutions through education.

Volunteer your time and skills to help organize and run the event. Whether assisting with logistics, coordinating workshops or providing administrative support, your contribution will be invaluable in ensuring the fair’s success.

Additionally, you can become a sponsor or donor for the event. Financial contributions help cover venue rental costs, promotional materials and guest speakers, allowing the fair to reach a larger audience and provide even more resources and support for veterans and military families.

If you are a veteran or part of a military family, you can participate in the fair by attending and networking with other attendees and sharing your experiences and insights. By actively engaging in the fair, you gain valuable knowledge and support as well as contribute to the overall atmosphere of empowerment and camaraderie.

Lastly, you can spread the word about the We CARE Veterans Fairs™ through social media, word of mouth, and other communication channels. By sharing information about the fair and its mission, you can help raise awareness and encourage more veterans and military families to attend.

Overall, your involvement and support are crucial in making the We CARE Veterans Fair™ a success.

The We CARE Veterans Fair occurs August 4-5, 2023, at the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta. Veterans, service members, National Guard, Reservists and families are encouraged to attend.
