Center for the Visually Impaired to Celebrate White Cane Awareness Day

Wednesday, September 27th, 2023

The Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI) will host our annual White Cane Awareness Day celebration. With support of Councilman Amir Farokhi (District 2), the Atlanta City Council issued a proclamation naming October 12 White Cane Awareness Day for Atlanta. The event will take place on Thursday, October 12 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at CVI in Midtown (739 West Peachtree Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30308).

White Cane Awareness Day is observed globally on October 15 to celebrate the achievements of blind or visually impaired people. The white cane is an important mobility tool for such individuals and serves as a visual cue for sighted people to recognize a person has vision loss.

“Instruction in the use of the white cane is an essential part of the training clients receive at CVI,” explains President Lisa Kennedy, “Working with our professional staff, people with vision loss can confidently travel safely and independently in their neighborhood, across town, and other destinations.”

This free community event will kick-off at 10:30 am with the white cane walk around Midtown, but guests may arrive beginning at 10:00 am. Following the walk, guests will gather at CVI for a program featuring guest speakers and a live, interactive performance with QuestionATL, local blind rapper and producer. Guests also have the opportunity to share a story about their white cane or their journey with vision loss. Light refreshments will be provided by Chick-Fil-A, Publix, and Tiff’s Treats.
