City Springs Theatre Company Opens New Technical and Set Production Facility and New Conservatory Tech Program

Wednesday, September 27th, 2023

City Springs Theatre Company (CSTC) is expanding with a new almost 10,000 square foot facility for design and production and will also be home to the new year-round Pre-Pro Tech program as an extension of the City Springs Theatre Conservatory, the arts education training arm of CSTC.

Through this expansion, the current CSTC studio space off of Dunwoody Place in Sandy Springs will be renovated, allowing for more rehearsal space for upcoming productions as well the educational programming of the Conservatory. This announcement comes on the heels of the past two productions of Monty Python’s Spamalot and CATS being CSTC’s most successful to date, three sold out summer camps during 2023, a recent sold out production of Legally Blonde Jr., and the announcement of its most robust schedule for the 2023-2024 season, which kicks off with Fiddler on the Roof directed by Tony-Award Winning Shuler Hensley on October 6, 2023.

Through the Pre-Pro Tech program, students will learn from CSTC’s professional production team. Sessions will include hands-on and classroom-based learning in many areas of technical theatre, including carpentry, scenic design & painting, lighting, sound, and stage management. They will have opportunities beyond the classroom to visit and watch technical rehearsals for CSTC professional company productions, field trips to local venues and shops, and to meet and network with professional designers and technicians. The Pre-Pro Tech program is only open to high school students; however, students from all over metro Atlanta are encouraged to participate.

During the spring semester, tech students will design and run the Pre-Pro Company’s end-of-year showcase. The school year program taking place September-May, begins Sept. 10, and will be held on Sundays every other week. Since inception, the Conservatory has included a tech component as a part of its high school production each Summer. During these sessions, performance students performed as cast members, while technical theatre students worked alongside CSTC’s production team, where they constructed the set, assisted in the lighting design, served as stage managers, and learned other technical elements. As a result of the popularity and success of the summer program, the school year program offers additional ongoing training to prepare for future career success in the entertainment industry.

Since it was launched five years ago, City Springs Theatre Conservatory has served more than 124,000 Atlanta-area students with educational programs, including student matinees and in-class virtual programming. In addition to the Pre-Pro Tech program, the Conservatory includes a pre-professional program, a summer high school musical, a college preparatory program, and private lesson training in voice, acting, and dance, as well as annual participation in the international Junior Theater Festival. This past summer, more than 500 students from across the metro Atlanta area partake participated in sold out Conservatory programs for elementary, middle and high school students.

“This expansion provides incredible growth opportunities for City Springs Theatre Company. The facility allows us to build and develop a brand-new concept for our upcoming production of Fiddler on the Roof,” said Executive Director Natalie DeLancey. “Through this new production facility, we’re also able to expand the space at our main studio for additional Conservatory programming. We’re entering our sixth season with robust growth and support, including more than 1,200 new season subscribers, and plan to continue bringing the highest caliber of talent to share with our audiences.”
