Hartsfield-Jackson Rolls Up Its Sleeves for Fall Cleanup on the Flint River

Wednesday, November 1st, 2023

Hartsfield-Jackson joined forces with Flint Riverkeeper, the Airport's Sustainability team, Delta Air Lines, and AATC on Saturday to clean up a stretch of the Flint River downstream of the world's busiest and most efficient airport. It was the second cleanup event this year, with ATL joining these organizations on April 21 for the Flint River Clean-Up and Sustainability Expo to commemorate Earth Day.

This initiative exemplifies the Airport's unyielding dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship, beginning in its own backyard. The Flint River, one of the longest free-flowing rivers in the country, originates just north of the Airport. Starting from a small spring in East Point, the stream flows directly under the Airport before joining the Chattahoochee River and emptying into the Apalachicola Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. The Flint River is approximately 349 miles long, and almost 220 miles of it flows without obstructions. Water flowing in the Flint River is essential for cities, farmers, and industries alike.

Also among the 60 participants Saturday were representatives from the Atlanta Regional Commission and Friends of the Flint. Crews collected 28 bags of trash in what has become a significant biannual sustainability initiative.
