New CareSource Data Shows Provider Participation in Value-based Care Increases Health Care Quality for Georgians

Tuesday, December 12th, 2023

CareSource, a nonprofit mission-driven Medicaid plan serving more than 450,000 Georgians, recently released data highlighting how its value-based care programs, a form of reimbursement that ties payments for care delivery to the quality of care provided, are increasing health outcomes while decreasing health care costs for Georgians.

“At CareSource, we have long recognized that our health care provider partners are vital to the success of value-based care initiatives and our goal of elevating the quality of health care for Georgians,” said Jason Bearden, CareSource Georgia president. “By incentivizing and rewarding partners who provide high-quality, cost-effective care, we are improving health outcomes for our members.”

CareSource works with health care providers across the state to implement value-based care initiatives designed to improve health and wellness. Partnering with providers who recognize the importance of offering value-based care has allowed CareSource to increase by 23% (from 2021 to 2022) the number of members in Georgia who see a provider that participates in a contractual value-based care model, bringing the total to 82%.

As a result of participation in this model, CareSource saw the following results in 2022, compared to 2021:

·        Two-times more members are seeing a primary care physician each year

·        Well child visits increased by 44%, and preventative dental visits increased by 10%

·        The amount of value-based care incentives payments to health care providers nearly doubled

·        Emergency room visits decreased by 16%

·        Member costs were reduced by 28%

In addition, members accessed quality services through the provider Quality Enhancement program which aims to improve maternal and infant health. The program includes well child visits for the first 30 months, which 24,508 members accessed, as well as prenatal and postpartum care. Timeliness of prenatal care increased by 15% for those who see a provider in a value-based care model, compared to those who do not, and child and adolescent well-care visits increased by nearly 14%.

CareSource currently has nine value-based care models available to their provider partners. CareSource will continue to build on this success by expanding this program across the state, which could continue to dramatically improve healthcare outcomes in Georgia and serve as a model for the future.
