Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, March 7th, 2024

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center announced the lineup for the 2024 Spring Concert Series presented by Audi Atlanta, which takes place in the beautiful outdoor amphitheater located on the grounds of the Callanwolde estate in the heart of Atlanta. The Spring Concert Series includes performances by Alanna Royale, Phillip-Michael Scales, Russell Cook & the Sweet Teeth, and Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics.

“This year’s Callanwolde Spring Concert Series features exceptional musicians delivering lively performances at the beautiful and historic Callanwolde estate,” said Callanwolde Associate Director of Arts and Entertainment Adam Faust. “The Callanwolde amphitheater is a true Atlanta treasure, providing an intimate atmosphere to spend time with friends, unwind, and experience an evening of live music while supporting affordable and accessible arts education for our community.”

Alanna Royale will kick off the Spring Concert Series on Friday, March 22. Laugh-out-loud funny and fearlessly outspoken, Royale entered the Nashville scene in 2013 and has repeatedly made her presence known with a swagger molded by fronting punk bands and a soulful voice audiences love. In her first year alone, the artist landed headlining slots at Nashville Pride Fest and won “Road to Bonnaroo” with only an EP under her belt. However, the biggest triumph for Royale is that she avoids the dreaded genre trap. As someone who has always followed artists that bravely morph from one record to the next, she also aspires for that same level of investment from her audience.

Phillip Michael Scales will entertain audiences on Friday, April 5. Influenced by his late uncle B.B. King, Scales initially shied away from blues despite a love for songwriting. With an independent spirit, he fronted indie bands, crafted his own music, and embraced a unique sound termed “Dive Bar Soul.” Following his uncle’s passing, Scales delved into the blues, discovering his story amid politics, identity and legacy. His single “Find a Way” gained national radio attention and was featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, propelling him to international performances.

Russell Cook & the Sweet Teeth will rock the amphitheater on Friday, April 19. What started as a two-guitar and drums juke-joint style trio gradually morphed into an exploratory rock band with a focus on improvisation. Featuring the sparkling guitar work of Scotty Knight and ace drummer Jeremy Clark, the Teeth play original music mixed with the occasional unique transformation of a traditional song. They have a reputation for pushing the music to see where it will go, using songs as the structure but staying open to spontaneity and playing in the moment. Russell Cook & the Sweet Teeth mine a vein of Americana that veers from electrified country blues and opens up to bombastic cosmic rock.

Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics will return to Callanwolde for a third year as the final concert of the series on May 3. Always a sold-out show, the Atlanta band entertains audiences with a mixture of funk, Southern soul, Motown, and R&B. Much more than just a group of revivalists trying to create a period piece, powerhouse singer Velle and her band will settle for nothing less than bringing these classic sounds glimmering with a fresh new modern sheen. They’re a world-class modern soul revue topped off with the cherry of Velle’s sultry voice, as she deftly toggles between sweetly crooned R&B tunes and expertly belted barn-burning get-downs that can instantly jolt a roomful of wallflowers into a wild dance party.
