Metro Atlanta Leaders Taking on Alzheimer's with a Pair of Dancing Shoes

Thursday, December 9th, 2021

Philanthropic Atlanta residents will show their moves on the dance floor for one exciting evening to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association, Georgia Chapter. The event, Dancing Stars of Atlanta, will take place on Saturday, May 21 at Cobb Galleria in Atlanta, Georgia.

This year's Dancing Stars of Atlanta local celebrity dancers include:

Ann Akerman Beard, Carol Templeton, Christine Strange, Dee Clemmons Lassiter, Emily McLarty, Evan Schoenberg, MD, Kim Boyd, KK Hudson, Pamela Jackson, Raquel Souza, Sue Diamond, Tammy Bult and Terri Lyndall.

Mirroring the popular TV show, this event pairs local Atlanta business leaders and philanthropists with professional dancers to raise money by gaining votes in a one-night gala dance competition. Supporters can vote online for their favorite dancer prior to the event. The 2021 Dancing Stars of Atlanta was held in a virtual format in 2021 due to the pandemic, raising more than $700,000. This year, the goal is to raise $1 million for care, support and research programs with the Alzheimer’s Association.

“This cast is on fire”, added Wakeelah Abdullah, Event Director with the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “Most of them have seen the toll that this disease takes on with their own families and friends and they are pumped to grab those dancing shoes to help end the disease”, added Abdullah.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only disease among the top 10 causes that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed. Additionally, more than 11 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the U.S. In Georgia alone, there are more than 150,000 people living with the disease and 334,000 caregivers.

“We are excited to have these individuals join our Georgia Chapter in the fight against this disease”, added Linda Davidson, Executive Director, Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter. This is such a commitment with the dance lessons but their real commitment is to raise critical funds”, added Davidson.
