Atlanta Sees Unchanged March Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Atlanta’s March unemployment rate was 3.2 percent, unchanged from a revised 3.2 percent in February. Last year, the rate was 4.4 percent in March. Despite this, Atlanta saw all-time highs in the labor force, the number of employed, and job numbers in March.

“Across Georgia, we continue to see increases in the labor force, the number of employed, and the number of jobs,” said Commissioner Mark Butler. “With Georgia having the lowest unemployment rate of the top ten most populated states, we are pleased to see Georgians enter the workforce filling the many open positions available in all of our regions and counties.”

The labor force increased in Atlanta by 6,250 and ended the month at an all-time high of 3,227,869. This number is up 109,727 since March 2021.

The number of employed was up 5,378 to 3,123,293, an all-time high, in March from February. From March 2021 to March 2022, the number of employed was up 141,722.

The number of unemployed was up 872 to 104,576 from March. From March 2021 to March 2022, the number of unemployed was down 31,995.

Atlanta ended March with 2,936,700 jobs, an all-time high. Jobs were up 14,500 (0.5%) over the month and up 177,300 (6.4%) over the year. Job numbers were at an all-time high in Information, 117,800, Professional and Business Services, 586,200, including the Professional, Scientific, and Technical sector, 259,600, and the Administrative and Support Services sector, 249,000, in Education and Health Services, 386,700, including the Health Care and Social Assistance sector, 319,200.

The sectors with the most over-the-month job gains included Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services, 3,600, Health Care and Social Assistance, 1,300, Accommodation and Food Services, 1,200, Wholesale trade, 900, Transportation and Warehousing, 900, Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation, 900, and Repair and Maintenance, 900.

The number of initial unemployment claims went down by 17 percent in Atlanta in March. When compared to last March, claims were down by about 87 percent.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 105,000 active job postings in metro Atlanta for March.
