In the early morning of Oct. 5, more than 2,100 enthusiastic runners and walkers gathered at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to take part in the 10th Annual Mayor’s 5K on the 5th Runway. The event, led by Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and Airport Interim General Manager Jan Lennon, gave participants the rare and exhilarating opportunity to race down Runway 10-28.

The race attracted participants from 25 states, with ages ranging from 10 to 81. The event raised more than $250,000. Almost $100,000 from in-kind gifts helped to make the event possible thanks to the generosity of 29 sponsors, including Delta Air Lines, Paradies Lagardère, Hudson Group and HMSHost.

Mayor Dickens and Interim General Manager Lennon warmly welcomed the crowd and emphasized the importance of supporting education and giving back to the community.

“The Mayor’s 5K on the 5th Runway isn’t just about running—we’re running to give scholarships to deserving students in Atlanta,” said Mayor Dickens. “Our young people deserve all the attention and support we can give them, and I could not be prouder of the way Atlanta has shown up for this group project.”

Interim ATL General Manager Lennon echoed these sentiments. “At Hartsfield-Jackson, we are more than just an airport; we are an integral part of this city’s heart. Hosting the Mayor’s 5K is one of the many ways we give back to the community we proudly serve. It’s truly inspiring to see so many people from across the nation come together to support our youth and their educational journeys.”

The event was brought to life with energetic hosts, including Atlanta News First morning anchor Brooks Baptiste and radio personality Ryan Cameron, who served as masters of ceremonies. Attendees also enjoyed music, line dancing, and appearances by the Atlanta Hawks Dancers and mascot Harry the Hawk, Atlanta Falcons mascot Freddie the Falcon, Atlanta Braves mascot Blooper, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets mascot Buzz, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. High School drumline. Smoothie King - Camp Creek was on hand with refreshing smoothie samples to keep everyone energized and ready to move.

This year’s event also featured a strong focus on sustainability. In partnership with EcoSneakers, participants were encouraged to donate worn sneakers. One full bin was collected and will be recycled. The plastic generated during the event, totaling 261 pounds, was separated and sent to the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) for proper recycling. Additionally, a sustainability table was set up to educate attendees on Hartsfield-Jackson’s ongoing sustainability initiatives, highlighting the Airport’s commitment to reducing waste and promoting environmental responsibility.

The Mayor’s 5K on the 5th Runway continues to be a highlight on the City’s calendar, bringing together residents  and visitors alike in the spirit of health, fitness, and community support. With this year’s success, the future of local students looks even brighter.
