The Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta and artist Melissa A. Mitchell, unveiled this week one of Atlanta’s newest public murals along the pedestrian walkway of the 17th Street Bridge, a prominent connector between Midtown and Atlantic Station. Now known as the Trefoil Trail, the installation features over 100 soccer balls and the flags of 48 countries, reflecting Atlanta’s growing role on the international sports stage. The mural was commissioned by the City of Atlanta as part of its Moving Atlanta Forward Initiative ahead of this summer's World Cup matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Designed by local artist and Girl Scout alumna Melissa A. Mitchell, the mural was brought to life by over 100 Girl Scouts of all ages from across the metro area on March 22nd with a day-long painting workshop. Not only will the mural serve as a lasting reminder of this summer’s activities, but also Girl Scouts’ continued contributions towards community service and civic pride.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on April 11 to officially unveil the installation. The event featured remarks from Mayor Andre Dickens and Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta CEO Jai Ferrell, along with a performance by the Jonesboro High School Majestic Marching Cardinals.

“If it matters to Atlanta, it matters to Girl Scouts,” said Jai Ferrell, CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta and 5th-generation Atlantan. “Whether we’re helping beautify the city, engaging with our government, or partnering with top businesses and national athletic teams, we’re a part of Atlanta’s story.”

“We are proud to partner with Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta on this exciting mural project as we prepare to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” said Adriane Jefferson, Executive Director, Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs.

What began with a surprise choice to host the 1996 Summer Olympics has grown to include this summer’s FIFA World Cup and the 2028 NFL Super Bowl. Certainly, Atlanta is claiming a spot on the world stage and, like any good hostess, is sprucing up for guests.

“This collaboration is a meaningful extension of our Bridges, Tunnels, and Walls Program through the Moving Atlanta Forward initiative, transforming the 17th Street Bridge at Northside Drive into a vibrant artistic gateway into Atlantic Station and our city.  Even more inspiring is that over 100 girls took part in painting this custom mural — leaving their mark on a work of art that will welcome residents and visitors alike, reflecting the creativity, pride, and future of Atlanta,” said Jefferson.

17th Street Bridge History

The 17th Street Bridge opened in 2004, connecting Midtown proper with what was being developed as Atlantic Station. Known locally as “The Gateway to Atlanta,” the almost 900-ft. span connects Peachtree Street and Northside Drive and provides pedestrian access for MARTA Arts Center station passengers.

Atlanta Mural History

Atlanta is considered one of the top cities for street art in the United States. Once considered more of a nuisance or acts of defiance, graffiti and street art have grown to be seen as a meaningful way to reflect the culture, customs, history, and promise of an area.
