Engineering jobs grew modestly in September, according to TechServe Alliance's newly launched Engineering Jobs Index.
The number of engineering jobs grew 0.15 percent sequentially last month to 2,467,700. On a year-over-year basis, engineering employment has grown by 1.42% since September 2012 adding 34,600 engineering workers.
"Unlike IT where employment growth has been robust, engineering jobs have been growing below the rate of the overall workforce," stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. "The tepid growth in engineering employment reflects the caution of many employers in adding jobs," observed Roberts.
The TechServe Alliance Engineering Jobs Index is a unique measurement of total engineering employment created by studying the ongoing staffing patterns of nearly two dozen engineering occupations in 30 select industries and industry sectors employing significant numbers of engineering workers.
TechServe Alliance's Engineering Jobs Index is modeled after its highly successful IT Employment Index. TechServe Alliance has reported monthly employment data in IT for over eight years. Its IT Employment Index is widely followed by the media and others interested in tracking U.S. IT employment being cited by hundreds of media outlets each month. With the launch of the Engineering Jobs Index, we are looking forward to making available each month an authoritative measurement of U.S. engineering employment as well.
