The Atlanta Technical College (ATC) Adult Education Department received three awards during the 2014 Georgia Adult Education Conference presented by the Technical College System of Georgia.  The plaques were presented to the ATC delegates, Alvetta Peterman Thomas, president; Dr. Murray Williams, vice president of academic affairs; and Monique Faulkner, dean of adult education, at the Annual Adult Education Luncheon held October 1 at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead.

ATC began offering adult education programs Fall 2013 to help Georgia residents improve basic academic skills such as reading, writing and math; as well as to assist with GED test preparation.  Classes are offered in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Adult Secondary Education (ASE/GED Prep).  Administrators also provide workforce development, financial literacy, and family support workshops.  The programs and services of the Adult Education Department are offered to Georgia residents, free-of-charge.

The first award presented to the college was for “FY2014 Greatest Percentage Growth in NRS Enrollment.”  National Reporting System or NRS enrollment is based on criteria set by the US Department of Education.  It accounts for all students with an adult education assessment and 12 or more attendance hours.  In 2013, the ATC program registered an NRS enrollment of 422.  That number grew to 765 in 2014.

The ATC Adult Education Department also received an award for “FY2014 Overall Achievement of Educational Gain Benchmarks.”  The program exceeded all of the performance goals set by the Technical College System of Georgia for FY2014:

                                                 GOAL                    ACTUAL

Entered Postsecondary                25.0%                    50.3%

Entered Employment                   26.0%                    32.3%

Enrolled in ABE/ASE/ESL              745                         765

Obtained GED                             69.0%                    72.0%

The GED testing center staff was also acknowledged for their outstanding work, earning special recognition for significant growth in the number of GED test-takers from FY2013 to FY2014.  Following an aggressive awareness campaign, the number of test-takers at the ATC site grew by more than 10 percent in a year.
