Georgia Power announced today that it has joined with the nonprofit organization Voices for Georgia'sChildren, as well as other notable Georgia businesses, to support the fourth annual Georgia Pre-K Week across the state Oct. 6-10. During the weeklong celebration, Pre-K centers open their doors to elected officials, business and community leaders and invite them to experience firsthand the high-quality education taking place in classrooms every day. Georgialeaders also have the opportunity to tour the centers and read to students.

Georgia Power is also unveiling a new children's book, Savy and Squander Saving Energy with Emerald and Dr. E, during Georgia Pre-K Week. The book is part of the company's Learning Power program; a statewide education initiative focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects and designed to bring energy education to the classroom. The book teaches children the value of using energy efficiently and is the third book created by Georgia Power for use in classrooms. Other books in the series include Power Savers – The Adventures of Savvy and Squander and Joining the Watt Squad – The Adventures of Savvy and Squander. A fourth book is currently under development by the company.

"Reading programs, such as Georgia Pre-K Week, provide the foundation for future academic success," said Paul Bowers, chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power. "We are committed to strengthening academic excellence in the state of Georgia, specifically in the area of STEM education."

Georgia Power's Learning Power program has reached more than 211,000 students since its inception three years ago. Through the program, education coordinators visit Georgia schools to present special hands-on STEM-related lessons that help students understand how energy is made and distributed from generation facilities to their homes.
