Georgia Researches Remedies for Rural Health Woes

Dr. Jean Sumner knows about the weaknesses in Georgia’s rural health care, including the lack of physicians and the closing of hospitals. But she and others say there are solutions on the horizon.

Sumner starts her workday at sunrise in Johnson County with a trip by the nursing home to visit patients before she clocks in at her practice. Afterward, it’s usually a trip to either the hospital or the nursing home. Then there’s related work, which for her includes the new post of associate dean for rural health in the Mercer University School of Medicine.

There’s a lot to do when there are only one or two physicians for dozens of miles around.
