Compromise Uber, Lyft Bill Clears Georgia House

After two years of wrangling, the Georgia House of Representatives passed compromise legislation Wednesday aimed at putting app-based ride-sharing services under the same regulations as taxicabs and limousines.

The bill, which was approved 160-10, would require drivers for companies including Uber and Lyft, to undergo background checks. During the last two legislative sessions, lawmakers have raised concerns for the safety of passengers of ride-sharing companies, citing media reports of crimes allegedly perpetrated by drivers against riders in other cities.
