IT Employment Grows Modestly in April; Engineering Employment Growth Sluggish

Press release from the issuing company

Thursday, May 14th, 2015

The number of IT jobs grew 0.3 percent sequentially last month to 4,913,200, according to TechServe Alliance, the national trade association of the IT & Engineering Staffing and Solutions industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment has grown by 5.0% since April 2014 adding 234,900 IT workers.

The rate of engineering job growth was sluggish, up only 0.04 percent sequentially to 2,516,400.  On a year-over-year basis, engineering employment has grown by 0.9% since April 2014 adding 22,400 engineering workers.

"While the rate of IT employment grew modestly in April, we saw continuing deceleration in the rate of growth.  Engineering employment was even more sluggish, barely posting positive numbers," stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. "While IT employment continues to outperform the growth rate of the overall workforce, engineering employment has recently been underperforming the general job market.  With that said, it is important to keep the data in perspective -- this is a slowing of the rate of growth -- not a contraction.  If the economy continues to strengthen after a sluggish first quarter, I am optimistic that strength will be reflected in improving IT and engineering employment numbers in the coming months," added Roberts.
