Shippers Pushed Cargo to U.S. East Coast Amid West Coast Labor Woes

Ocean shipping volume in the U.S. grew faster at ports on the East Coast than those on the West Coast in 2014 as labor strife at Pacific ports sent importers and exporters looking for alternate gateways, according to a new report by real estate firm CBRE Inc.

Much of the gain in the East was the result of attempts by shippers to get around temporary bottlenecks at the major ports in California, but East Coast ports expect to retain a portion of the new business over the long-term, CBRE said in the report being released this week.
