Personal Fundraising Tools Launch for Instagram Users

Staff Report

Thursday, July 23rd, 2020

Facebook is announcing that they are bringing personal fundraising to Instagram. Instagram users will have the ability to fundraise for personal causes on that platform too. If can be for yourself, your small business, a friend or any cause that's important to you.

Fundraising has long been an integral part of the Facebook app platforms. To date, 45M people have raised more than $3B on Facebook and Instagram for causes they care about.

More people are using Instagram to engage in social activism than ever before. This has been particularly important in light of the economic downturn due to Covid-19, and as many seek to raise money to support racial justice initiatives. The company is excited to give people the opportunity to activate for their community around these causes directly on Instagram.

  • People have raised more than $65M for COVID-related fundraisers globally since January 2020 on Facebook and Instagram.

  • On Instagram specifically, donations on Instagram doubled in the last 30 days (compared to the 30 prior). And, posts mentioning 'donation' in the US increased over 200%.

The platform will begin with a small test this week to create a Personal Fundraiser on Android, followed by iOS. If you can donate to a fundraiser through the donation sticker, you are also eligible to donate to a Personal Fundraiser. Instagram won’t take a cut of the proceeds, and have structured their policies to prevent these fundraisers from being used for fraud or to fund activities they don’t condone as a business.
