Using experimental data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s weekly Household Pulse Survey, CommercialCafe’s latest study looks at how many Americans were working from home in 2020 compared to 2019, as well as which states and metros had the largest share of their populations move their work online.
Here are some of our findings:
-
In the Atlanta metro area, 2 million workers, representing 42% of adult residents, telecommuted in 2020 — an increase of 677% compared to the 262,000 telecommuters in 2019.
-
In Georgia, 36% of people worked remotely during the pandemic, which was below the national average of 37%.
-
Overall, 91 million or one-third of all Americans older than 18 worked from home during the pandemic — a 916% increase compared to 2019.
-
The largest demographic group to telecommute during the pandemic where people with a bachelor’s degree or higher, as 61% of them said they worked from home in 2020.
