Apartment Boom Sees Self Storage Skyrocket with Atlanta 6th Most Active Market Nationally
Thursday, May 20th, 2021
We’ve researched both multifamily and self storage development trends in the 100 biggest US metros between 2011 and 2020 in order to find out which places offer the best self storage options to apartment renters.
Here are some of the main findings:
-
Metro Atlanta built 8.1M square feet of self storage over 108 facilities in the past decade, surpassing Miami, Denver and Austin.
-
The area now offers 6.2 sq. ft. per capita, below the national average of 7 sq. ft. per capita.
-
Atlanta also added close to 79,000 multifamily units in the same period of time – surpassing Denver, Chicago and Phoenix.
-
The self storage and apartment inventories were not the only ones to grow in Metro Atlanta in the past 10 years, the average salary also went up 22% over the decade, now ranging around $56,790/year.
Below I have attached a visual with the top 10 cities that built the most self storage square footage in the last decade and their corresponding multifamily unit additions. I can also give you access to a folder containing all visuals and tables if that would be more helpful.
