Thursday, June 10th, 2021

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms moves forward with several legislative agendas after receiving support from the Atlanta City Council.

Items passed include efforts to improve public safety, vaccine equity and the arts:

“Light Up the Night” Public Safety Funding: The City Council voted to approve $1 million funding from the FY21 budget required for Mayor Bottom’s “One Atlanta: Light Up the Night” street light program. It will allow the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) to install 10,000 streetlights focused in areas with high rates of traffic crashes and crime.

Vaccine Equity partnership with MARTA: City Council approved a measure from Mayor Bottoms’ Vaccine Equity Agenda. The ordinance approves the City to receive a donation of 40,000 round-trip MARTA Breeze Cards from the transit authority. The cards will be available through The United Way and provide free rides for citizens to receive COVID-19 vaccines. Transportation has previously been noted as a barrier for residents who want to get vaccinated.

Black Music and Entertainment Walk of Fame: An ordinance approving the installation of the Black Music and Entertainment Walk of Fame passed City Council, clearing the way for the Mayor and the City of Atlanta to celebrate Black music’s contribution to the arts. The agreement between the City, Georgia Entertainment Caucus and the Black American Music Association will allow the installation of sidewalk medallions honoring African American entertainers. The installation will be in the right-of-way of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in the area near its intersection with Northside Drive. This vote further underscores the Bottoms’ administration’s commitment to supporting and enhancing the arts.
