Georgia State University Library’s plan to convert the parking area under Library North (C Lot) into a student-focused “Study Commons” has been approved by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.

The addition of the Study Commons to Library North will bring more than 200 additional student seats to the library, increasing overall capacity by nearly 10 percent.

“We are grateful to the Board of Regents for approving the project, to the university for its support, and especially to our students, who voted with their fees for expanded and improved library spaces and services,” said Jeff Steely, dean of libraries at Georgia State. “Right now, we are putting the finishing touches on the new, state-funded Library North entrance, with its wonderful outdoor rooftop terrace. This adjacent, ground-level space will add much needed indoor capacity. The Study Commons also offers a terrific opportunity for alumni and friends to support our students and recognize a loved one with a naming gift.”

Naming opportunities include a quiet study room, flexible, active collaboration areas, group study rooms and meeting spaces. The Study Commons will nearly double the number of gender-neutral, single-occupant restrooms on campus and feature a wellness room designed with new mothers in mind. With its own secure entrance, separate from the rest of the sprawling Library North-Library South complex, the space will allow for the library to respond to student requests for additional late night and weekend hours.

Steely said the new Study Commons will make efficient use of a valuable downtown real estate while helping to enhance the visual appeal of the library and the surrounding neighborhood.

“An important part of this project is making better use of existing space,” he said. “This project will see an inefficient parking lot become a center for student learning and collaboration, with expanded hours and a casual, coffee shop vibe. Our hope is to include lots of windows, making a connection with the greenway and Collins Street.”

The Board of Regents will select an architecture firm over the summer to oversee the design of the Study Commons, with construction taking place throughout 2022 in preparation for an anticipated opening in fall 2023.
